SAP® S/4HANA · Release upgrade

Stay current. Stay in maintenance.

Already on S/4HANA? Releases 2020 and 2021 are leaving mainstream maintenance. We take you to the latest release with a tested plan, a short downtime window and a fallback.

01 — Why upgrade

Out of maintenance means out of legal updates.

Each S/4HANA release gets mainstream maintenance for a fixed time. After that, there are no new legal changes, tax updates or security fixes for your release — and new SAP® innovations need a current one.

02 — What you get

More than a version number.

Maintenance & legal updates

Back in mainstream maintenance — tax, legal and security updates keep coming.

New SAP® features

Newer Fiori apps, embedded analytics and the AI features SAP® only ships for current releases.

Cleaner code base

Use the upgrade to retire unused custom code and move extensions toward clean core.

Planned downtime

SUM with near-Zero Downtime Maintenance (nZDM) or ZDO keeps the business window short.

03 — How we work

Four steps, one go-live weekend.

  1. 1

    Check

Upgrade path, add-ons and custom code checked against the target release — with QTS and SAP®'s maintenance planner.

  2. 2

    Plan

Target release and feature pack, downtime strategy (SUM, nZDM or ZDO), code freeze and fallback.

  3. 3

    Upgrade

Sandbox from a production copy first, then DEV, QAS and PRD — with regression tests in between.

  4. 4

    Stabilise

Hypercare after go-live, fixes for remaining findings and a plan for the next release.

04 — The upgrade package

A fixed scope you can plan with.

Most upgrades follow the same pattern. We put it into a package with a clear scope, so you know what happens, when and what it costs.

  • Upgrade path analysis and target release recommendation
  • Custom code and SPAU/SPDD adjustments, ATC run on the target release
  • Sandbox upgrade on a copy of production, with runtime measured
  • DEV, QAS and PRD upgrades including downtime planning
  • Regression test plan — or support for your own test team
  • Fiori and embedded analytics content activated for the new release
  • Two weeks of hypercare after go-live
FAQ

Good questions to start with

How long does an S/4HANA upgrade take?

Usually three to six months from check to go-live, depending on custom code, add-ons and how many systems are in your landscape.

How much downtime should we expect?

With SUM and the right downtime option (nZDM or ZDO) the business downtime usually fits into one weekend. We measure the real runtime in the sandbox upgrade first.

Can we skip releases, for example from 2020 to 2025?

In most cases, yes — S/4HANA can be upgraded across several releases in one step, as long as your add-ons and custom code support the target. The maintenance planner confirms it for your system.

Do we need to retest everything?

You need regression tests for your key processes. We help you set up a focused test plan, and QTS shows where custom code is affected so tests can focus there.

We are still on ECC. Is this the right page?

No — for ECC 6.0 the move to S/4HANA is a conversion, not an upgrade. See our brownfield migration together with GOLIVE.
